From cup to league: How Pirates coach is turning the tide

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has begun to rewrite the history books in the Betway Premiership, after equalling an eight-year record at the club with a 3-0 thumping of Polokwane City.

Riveiro has won all domestic trophies on offer, bar the Carling Knockout, since assuming his position at the club just over two-seasons ago.

For the past two campaigns, the Spaniard had experienced a series of contrasting results in the league, with the side's' inconsistency the obvious reason why they could not challenge for the title.

The start of the Betway Premiership season has been where Pirates were faltering, even before Riveiro was appointed, as he tactician became the first coach at the club to win two consecutive league games from the start of the season since 2016/17.

Even starting the Premiership season with a victory has been difficult for them, as they have won their first league game of the campaign only three times in the last eight years.

The last time they won the league title, back-to-back, in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons, they did not even win their first two matches.

The pages of history at the Soweto giants would have to turn to 2002/03 since the club last won their first three league games in succession, which is when they were crowned champions in the end.

There are therefore temptations already that this could be the season Riveiro and Bucs finally lay their hands on the Premiership trophy for the first time in 13 years.

However, the 47-year-old was not getting carried away after their win over Rise and Shine.

"We played two games, we're so happy to collect maximum points, but right now our full attention, trust me, is already in [on] Richards Bay, recovery, travelling to Durban," Riveiro said at the post-match press conference.

"We played three times against Richards Bay, we got eliminated in the Carling Cup, we drew 0-0 in Durban and we lost the game in Orlando. So, it goes without saying that it's going to be a tough game for us to collect maximum points there. We have to only focus on that one."

Sunday's game at King Zwelithini Stadium kicks off at 15:00.
