Pirates’ CAF embarrassment repeat?

Orlando Pirates' draw against Disciples FC will revoke memories that the club will not stand proud of through their CAF Champions League forays over the years.

Pirates were held to a goalless draw by the champions of Madagascar in a first preliminary round, first leg game played in Mauritius and one that they were largely expected to win.

Even the odds offered by betting houses made Pirates overwhelming favourites to convincingly win, with Disciples still given just a drop in the ocean chance of even getting a draw.

With Disciples only getting prize money of approximately R81,000 for their championship-winning efforts and playing in a non-professional league, it made sense considering that the Soweto giants earned R7,5 million for finishing second last season and play in a league where players can earn six figures with ease.

However, football has surprises and Pirates have been left in tears before.

Of all the four occasions that Bucs have been knocked out at this stage of the competition, the one that hurt the most happened in 2010 and it had similarities to what has happened so far with Disciples.

Just like what has happened now with Disciples, they also drew 0-0 away at Gaborone United in the first leg in February of that year.

Gaborone United – champions of Botswana in 2009 – were expected to be a walk in the park for Pirates, who also entered the competition that year by virtue of having finished second in the 2008/09 season.

Jose Riveiro's men are in this year's competition after finishing runners-up last term.

That year, they were coming together under Rudi Krol and had Andile Jali, Teko Modise, Lucky Lekgwathi, Rooi Mahamutsa, Katlego Mashego, Dikgang Mabalane, Benson Mhlongo, Happy Jele, Thulasizwe Mbuyane and Moeneeb Josephs carrying most of the load.

Pirates took the home game of their return leg to Gqeberha and it turned into calamity when they drew 2-2 and were knocked out on the away goals rule.

This was humiliation for Pirates, who were up against a group of GU players who still hold that day as the biggest achievement of their careers.

On that afternoon, Rudi Krol's charges led 2-0 until 86 minutes when they then conceded two goals within two minutes.

Just like Disciples now, GU were described as minnows compared to Pirates, yet they stunned their fancied opponents.

So, the Houghton-based side will take caution that names such as Andoniaina Rakotondrazaka Andrianavalona, Nantenaina Ando Rakotondrajoa, Tendry Manovo Randrianarijaona, and Marcelin Randrianjarasoaniaina need to be taken seriously when they face off on Friday evening at Orlando Stadium.
