Pirates left in a tight corner

Orlando Pirates' aspirations for further silverware this season will come with negotiating a hellish fixtures programme that may come up to 25 matches, plus travel being squeezed into 12 weeks.

This will be on condition that they reach the finals of the Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League.

Bucs have at least one in the Nedbank Cup, which will be against SuperSport United in the quarterfinals on the weekend of March 7/8/9.

Should they proceed, then April 11/12 is booked for the semi-finals, while the final is slotted in for May 10.

Then, in the Champions League – whose quarterfinal draw is scheduled for 17:00 today (Thursday) – two dates (April 1 and April 8) are already booked for the two legs of the last eight matches.

Pirates will play the first leg away against any of Mamelodi Sundowns, MC Alger, or Pyramids, meaning trips to Tshwane, Algiers, or Cairo before hosting the second leg.

The two semi-final dates are April 18/19 and April 25/26, while the final is pencilled in for May 24 and June 1.

Long-distance travel to North Africa is guaranteed for the Soweto giants with six of the eight teams in the last eight from that part of the continent.

Beyond that, there are 16 matches left to play in the Betway Premiership from when they host Cape Town City on Saturday until the end of May.

March 17-25 is a FIFA calendar date just like June 2-10.

Mamelodi Sundowns have 13 league matches to play and similar prospects in the Champions League and Nedbank, though they will then head out to the FIFA Club World Cup due to run from June 14 – July 13.

Stellenbosch FC have 15 to play in the league, plus commitments in the Nedbank Cup and CAF Confederation Cup.

The unresolved case of Royal AM – who have all their games suspended until further notice – has created further complications for the domestic calendar.
