Stellenbosch halt SuperSport's winning streak

SuperSport United were denied their third consecutive victory in the Betway Premiership after a 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch on Saturday evening.

SuperSport remained unchanged from their narrow win over Magesi, as Bradley Grobler and Tashreeq Morris spearheaded the attack, with Vincent Pule and Gamphani Lungu on either wing.

Stellies, meanwhile, had two changes following defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns, as Ashley Cupido and Sanele Barns were recalled.

The game was open in the early stages and on 17 minutes, Jayden Adams gave the visitors the lead with a header from a cross by Fawaaz Basadien from a corner situation.

Matsatsantsa used their wing play effectively on the half-hour mark after Morris levelled matters with a free header in the box from a cross by Pule.

Steve Barker's charges should have went ahead again five minutes later after Cupid intercepted a bad back pass to go clear on goal but he was thwarted by goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa in the box.

As the match continued to flow freely, Grobler also had a good chance to make it 2-1 for United a moment later after he received a cross unmarked in the back post but he guided his shot over the crossbar and the sides eventually went to the half-time break level pegging.

The game was still there for the taking for either side early from the break and just after the hour-mark, Lungu had what looked like an easy task to tap-in in a cut-back by Aphiwe Baliti but he was thwarted in front of the goal-line by a lurking defender.

With 22 minutes to go, Gavin Hunt made a tactical change as he withdrew Grobler and brought on midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu.

SuperSport, however, had forward Terrence Dzvukamanja in the dying minutes after he replaced Lungu but there was no winner in the end as the game ended all square.

Stellies remained in fourth spot in the standings while Hunt's men dropped down to sixth.
