'I was scared when we played against Kaizer Chiefs'

Former Orlando Pirates captain Happy Jele has revealed why he was 'scared' when his side came up against a Kaizer Chiefs that included the likes of Collins Mbesuma and Itumeleng Khune.

The veteran right-back turned centre-back has played the most Soweto derbies out of any player in the Pirates' history. Jele played in 33 derbies. He is followed behind by  Siphiwe Tshabalala and Itumeleng Khune of Amakhosi.

The battles between the two sides have priced some of the most dramatic moments in South African football history.

Speaking to Vodacom media this week, Jele named some of the players that gave him the hardest time during his playing career.

"The keeper that game me problems was Itumeleng Khune. He was one of the great goalkeepers in the country," Jele said via the sponsor's YouTube channel.

"He saved some of my penalties at training in the national team. So I was scared when we played against Kaizer Chiefs, maybe if we go to penalties because he knew when I would put the ball.

"But he never stopped any of my penalties. I was scared of him because he was a great keeper.

Alongside Khune, 'Magents' also named Collins Mbesuma, Knowledge Musona, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Lebogang Mokoena.

"I also have to mention Mbesuma, one of the best strikers that game me problems," Jele added.

"He is big, he knows how to turn, he can score goals. He was giving me a lot of problems when I woke hm. The other one I will mention is Knowledge Musona. He is a good striker, more mobile, energy is there and is a tricky player. He was giving me problems when I played as a right-back."

The next Soweto Derby will be played on 3 May.
