My Dream Team: Brent Carelse

In this edition of My Dream Team, ex-Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Brent Carelse reveals the names of the 10 best players he had as teammates.

In a successful football career that spanned 16 years, Carelse also represented clubs like Ajax Cape Town, SuperSport United and Chippa United.

He tells KickOff.com: "The crop of players I chose they had sort of successful careers," before adding, "I think what set them apart was the hunger to succeed in their careers. "What I learned from the time I spent with them was the hunger to be the best, there's no use to go and play football if there's no hunger to beat the other team.

"I can't say much about today's players because I never spent time with them, but that was our mentality. It didn't matter whether we played Ria Stars or another team, all we wanted was to win."

The affable Carelse is hesitant to draw comparisons between his generation and the current crop of players in the PSL.

"It's difficult for me to comment, you know, because I'm not there. Yes, the entertainment value of it has gone down, that we can see with the number of supporters attending matches. When we played, the average support was 12 000 a match, now it's different.

"When we played, there was not that much money, maybe that served as a motivation."

Formation: 4-4-2

Goalkeeper: Moeneeb Josephs

"I think I like his talent and personality. He is very passionate about the team that he is playing for, and always wants to win."

Defenders: Andile Sixaba, David Kannemeyer, Edelbert Dinha, Dominic Isaacs

"Sixaba used to play for Seven Stars and Ajax. He was solid, and very difficult for you to get past him.

"Kannemeyer, we fed off each other, we spent a lot of time together. At Sundowns, at SuperSport, and even at Ajax, we were together. We didn't want to lose - he would have a go at me and I would have a go at him.

"Dinha, he would start the build-ups, and he was able to defend if the situation demanded him to.

"Isaacs, one of the underrated defenders. We grew up together at the School of Excellence. He never got a chance in the national team, even though he played for all the junior national teams."

Midfielders: Dillon Sheppard, Mkhanyiseli Siwahla, Shane Poggenpoel, Brent Carelse

"Sheppard, his combination with Kannemeyer was unstoppable. His left foot was amazing, he scored some unbelievable free-kicks.

"Siwahla, the limelight, I think, went into his head, but what a player hey. One-on-one, he will finish you, baba - you are behind.

"Poggenpoel, what a player! when I played with him, I didn't worry too much about defending.

"Brent Carelse, me obviously. I could have achieved much more, but certain platforms weren't there for me, and I wasn't given the recognition I probably deserved. I think anybody would be silly not to put me in their team if they have me in their squad."

Strikers: Grant Young, Surprise Moriri

"Young, for his hunger to score goals and to run. He went abroad and scored goals.

"Moriri, I need somebody who can play. We can't give Grant Young through balls all the time [laughs]. We need another goal poacher with composure."
