'Muti man had given each of them brandy to drink'

In this week's edition of My Muti Story, KickOff speaks to former AmaZulu FC goalkeeper Vusimuzi Yashe.

Yashe shares an intriguing story about how a traditional healer almost got the entire squad drunk after making them drink alcohol.

Who and where?

"I was playing for AmaZulu at the time when they were still called Zulu Royals. That club believed heavily in muti, and I was the only Xhosa player on the team; the rest were Zulus and foreigners.

"I was still new to the team when I was awakened by a hard knock on my door at 3 am. When I opened the door, it was the assistant coach, Gavin Lane. He said to me, 'Come, come Vusi, we are taking all the players to KwaNongoma.' That week, we were scheduled to play against Kaizer Chiefs.

"I refused to go, so they left me behind. It was just me, John Maduka, and Gary Goldstone who stayed behind.

"The next day, when we arrived at training, only the three of us and a couple of other players showed up. Apparently, the rest couldn't come because they were drunk. The muti man had given each of them a brandy to drink, but instead of taking a sip or a shot, they filled their glasses. As a result, they couldn't wake up for the morning session, and training for that day was cancelled. Players were suffering from hangovers."

What was the result?

"Kaizer Chiefs beat us 2-1. After the game, my teammates blamed me, accusing me of being the reason for the defeat because I refused to go to the muti man.

"Interestingly, after the game, the AmaZulu supporters stopped the team bus and told us that I was the only player who performed well, which was me. That didn't sit well with my teammates, and I suspected my life was in danger, so I decided to leave the team."

Was taken against you by the club?

"No, fortunately for me, the chairman was Xhosa, Mr. Sisa Bikitsha, and he understood my situation."
