'They suspected Jomo for the lightning strike'

In this edition of My Muti Story, KickOff catches up with Peter Matshitse who gives his thoughts about the infamous George Goch incident where he was struck by lightning during a PSL match in 1998.

On that awful day, the former Moroka Swallows center-back back and his other two teammates were struck by lightning.

The match was abandoned with Jomo Cosmos leading 2-0. None of the Cosmos players suffered serious damage.

Matshitse says this led to Swallows camp suspecting Sono for the incident, saying he had used strong muti against them.

"I can't tell if it was muti or what, but that day Cosmos were leading us 2-0 when it started raining," Matshitse tells KickOff.

"Then the lightning struck and the match was immediately stopped, [laughs] I don't know if it was because of muti. I don't believe in muti so I can't tell if it was muti or natural causes.

"The reason I was affected it's because I was playing on the left-hand side, it struck almost every Swallows player that was playing on that side.

"When it struck I felt like somebody had hit me with an axe. I thought my skull was cracked open. I remember falling, after that, I don't know what happened.

"I woke up in the dressing room, surrounded by many people. I couldn't move my joints, everything was stiff. Every joint in my body had locked. The paramedics were aiding us, and the next day we went to the hospital.

"But we all know muti is being used by most clubs, I played for both Cosmos and Swallows, so I know they do use muti.

"On that day no muti man came to the Swallows change room, the only thing I noticed was the wet kit. But I don't believe in muti.

"After that match, everybody suspected muti as the cause of what happened, and most fingers were pointed at Jomo.

"[Laughs] Mina all I saw was the rain and lightning, I'm not sure if Jomo is the one who set up the lightning or not, but how can somebody use lightning in sport? You will end up killing the players"
