PSL final stretch fixture issues still unsettled

The last weekend of the PSL fixtures has been affected by Mamelodi Sundowns’ progression to the final of the CAF Champions League.

Sundowns will play the first leg of the CAF Champions League final at home on May 24 against Pyramids FC and then travel to Cairo, Egypt for the second leg on June 1.

From there, June 2-10 is reserved for international football as a FIFA date with the Tshwane giants then traveling to USA for the FIFA Club World Cup set to run from June 14 – July 13.

The PSL has the side lined up to play Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on what has been planned to be the last day of the season on May 24, but that game will have to make way.

This then means beyond the issues brought by the expulsion of Royal AM from the league, Sundowns will also not feature on what the league has planned to be the last day of the league season.

Should the destiny of the league title still not be settled by then as Orlando Pirates also remain interested, it will then create challenges for the league.

As has been the norm, the PSL always has it planned that the last two fixtures are played on the same day and at the same time to avoid a variety of possibilities relating to manipulation and unfair advantages.

Bucs still have eight games to play in the league, which will have to be squeezed into the next three-and-a-half weeks.

So far, the confirmed league fixtures for them are Sekhukhune United (April 30), Kaizer Chiefs (May 3), Golden Arrows (May 6), TS Galaxy (May 17), AmaZulu FC (May 24), while games against SuperSport United, Magesi FC, and Arrows are hanging.

The Brazilians still have six league games to play against Richards Bay FC (April 30), Cape Town City (May 3), Magesi (May 17) and the match against Chippa (May 24), which will now have to make way.

There is also the outstanding game against Stellenbosch FC and another against Chippa postponed earlier on in the season, which will have to be played.

These games will now need to be squeezed into the midweek days either side of the Nedbank Cup final weekend.

Sundowns last played a league match on March 16 when they lost to Pirates.
