'SuperSport United is the country's development side'

In this edition of Supporters Forum, KickOff catches up with SuperSport United's number one supporter, Lebo Malema, popularly known as 'Bona Fela.'

The Atteridgeville-based football fanatic supports the club's decision to relieve top coach Gavin Hunt of his duties.

"As fans, we might not know much about what happens during training sessions, in WhatsApp groups, or in the office, but I think they gave coach Hunt enough time," Bona Fela tells KickOff.

"We know we lost quality players, but to be honest, we didn't play well this season. How many times has the team scored more than one goal in a match? Maybe once or twice.

"I love coach Hunt, and he knows that. We talk, and I have been telling him not to worry—everything will turn around. But unfortunately, the results were not coming.

"SuperSport United is the country's development side. As supporters, we even assumed that the players no longer wanted the coach at the club.

"I don't know if the players felt the coach's tactics were outdated. When we lost 3-0 to Golden Arrows at Peter Mokaba, I spoke to their then-coach, Mabhudi Khenyeza. He told me, 'I know Gavin Hunt; he is my former coach, and I played under him. I know how he plays'.

"But I love coach Gavin Hunt, and I wish he could get a national team job somewhere else. I believe his coaching style can still work in a place where they don't know him.

"I think the decision to let him go didn't come at the right time, it took too long. SuperSport has never missed out on qualifying for the top eight before, but today we are fighting relegation," he added.

"We have players like Tyson Hlatshwayo, Lyle Lakay, Samir Nurkovic, Vincent Pule, and Ndlovu, but our position on the log table suggests something different.

"Every time coach Gavin Hunt has been suspended, the team has played better under Andre Arendse. This might create tension between the coach and the players.

"I remember one of our former players, Thalente Mbatha, in one of our games against Stellenbosch here in Pretoria. He told me before moving to Pirates, 'I'm going to leave; the coach doesn't like me'. Shortly after that, he was loaned to Pirates. Currently, Lyle Lakay is not playing, and we don't know the reason why.

"I appeal to SuperSport management to consider Craig Roslee for the coaching position. I'm happy to see Onismor Bhasera back; I believe defenders and goalkeepers make great coaches."
