Can Tembo rescue struggling Richards Bay?

The reality facing Kaitano Tembo at Richards Bay is that he is not sitting comfortable with red lights flashing on his face ahead of the meeting with his former employers Sekhukhune United.

Richards Bay come up against Sekhukhune – where Tembo was sacked after just four months in the job at the beginning of the 2022/23 season – needing nothing short of victory at King Zwelithini Stadium.

The Natal Rich Boys are without victory since Tembo took over at the beginning of the season losing three and drawing one.

However, further stress for the club is the fact that they have not been able to win a match since January 14 when they overcame Marumo Gallants 2-0.

Luckily for Richards Bay las season was that they had already had the cushion of 29 points in the bag from the opening 16 games which helped them survive the drop.

Having managed to stay up and changed coaches into the new season, the coastal club still can't win a football match and have now played 18 league games without victory which stretches to 19 including the Nedbank Cup defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns.

While their 18 league games without a win stretches over two seasons it is still amongst some of the worst runs since August 1996 when topflight football was restructured and rebranded into the PSL.

Witbank Aces went 18 games without a win in the inaugural PSL season (1996/97) season and were relegated.

Mother City played their last 23 games of the 1999/2000 season without winning and were relegated.

In winning two games from the 34 played in that season, they went through eight coaching changes through that disastrous campaign in which they were both horrible and hopeless.

Then at the start of the 2001/02 season, Tembisa Classic had no win from the first 20 league games and ended up also sinking to the first division.

Jomo Cosmos couldn't win a game in any of their last 19 games as they went down in the 2007/08 season.

So, for Richards Bay, while it is early in the season with plenty points to play for, they need to find a way back to the feeling of winning matches.
