Kenya international Ovella Ochieng completes sensational return to DStv Premiership

Kenya international Ovella Ochieng has made a sensational return to the DStv Premiership after completing a move to surprise package Richards Bay on Wednesday.

Ochieng was unveiled by Richards Bay in an official announcement with the player making a return to South Africa after previously featuring for Marumo Gallants.

Ochieng had previously been signed by Gallants at the beginning of the 2021/22 season before eventually departing the club in controversial circumstances last December.

The 22-year-old failed to feature for or be paid by Gallants after complications arose with regards to his ITC registration having last been on the books of Swedish club Vasalunds IF.

In leaving Marumo, Ovella then filed for a case of breach of contract with FIFA that he won that forced the Limpopo club to pay over R500 000 in compensation to avoid a transfer ban.

Ochieng has since spent this year with Botswana club Township Rollers and now with his dues long settled by Marumo he has returned.

"We are delighted to announce the signing of Kenyan international winger Ovella Ochieng.

"Welcome to Natal Rich Boyz Family," reads a statement from Richards Bay.

Ochieng is an explosive winger who played for Kariobangi Sharks in his homeland before leaving for Sweden and has already won caps for the Kenya senior national team.

He becomes the latest of a handful of Kenyans to ever play in the PSL who include Teddy Akumu, Andre Moogi, Musa Otieno, Ali Abondo, Joseph Okumu, Clifton Miheso, Brian Mandela Onyango, Masoud Juma, Phillip Opiyo Wire, Paul Ooko Were, and Jon Busolo.

Musa Otieno

Otieno was the longest serving having earned legendary status playing for Santos where he played 400 games.
