Zondi: Xoki, Sibisi are Pirates' best centre-back pairing

Orlando Pirates legend and former defender Ronnie Zondi has shared his thoughts on who should start at centre-back during Olisa Ndah's absence.

Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has been frequently changing his defensive line-up as he searches for a strong centre-back pairing for the Sea Robbers.

Zondi believes Riveiro should maintain the partnership between Nkosinathi Sibisi and Tapelo Xoki, while allowing emerging star Mbekezeli Mbokazi more time to develop.

"There has been a lack of consistency in Pirates' defence, and it's an area of concern for me," shares Zondi.

"It's very difficult for our defence to keep a clean sheet. However, Sibisi and Xoki have what it takes. I'm just unsure about how much communication exists between them.

"At some point, one of them has to take the lead. It's hard to say who that should be, as they are both performing well. Sometimes you are fortunate to have quality leadership, allowing you to take charge and give instructions. I hope that when the time is right, one of them will step up," the former player added.

"One of them must marshal the defence and issue instructions. Their physical presence and experience should enable them to do so. Defence is more about the basics than anything else.

"So for me, Sibisi and Xoki stand out. They need to seize the opportunity and not let these up-and-coming youngsters take over too easily. You can see by their performances that these youngsters mean business.

"I believe Mbokazi should be given time to grow, he has a lot of potential. I met him once, and he has a strong physical presence. He is young, strong, and very brave.

"Xoki and Sibisi must also be cautious because as soon as Mbokazi gains more confidence and experience, he will be ready to take charge."
