Tinkler's Sekhukhune jump to third spot

Sekhukhune United jumped to third spot on the Betway Premiership table after defeating Polokwane City 2-0 in the Limpopo Derby on Saturday evening.

Eric Tinkler's charges came into the clash on the back of a 2-1 victory away to his former side Cape Town City two weeks ago, while Rise and Shine went down 1-0 to Orlando Pirates.

The Limpopo derby between these two clubs have not been the most entertaining in recent years, with the last three encounters in the top-flight ending in draws.

Rise and Shine carved out the first big chance of the first half just before the 20-minute mark as goalkeeper Renaldo Learner was called upon to produce a fine save to deny Oswin Appollis' strike.

However, it was Sekhukhune who broke the deadlock on 37 minutes courtesy of a strike from Ellis Rammala to open his account for the club this campaign.

Polokwane coach Phuti Mohafe responded with a double change at the start of the second half, as Nyakala Raphadu and Thato Letshedi replaced Puleng Marema and Bonginkosi Dlamini to freshen up the attack.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser in the second half, but it was Tinkler's men who got the next goal as Daniel Cardoso doubled the lead with a clinical finish past goalkeeper Brian Okoth.

Cardoso's goal certainly knocked the win out of Polokwane's sail, as Sekhukhune held on to make it back-to-back victories in the league and leapfrog Stellenbosch into third spot.

Confirmed line-ups:

Sekhukhune United: Leaner, Langa, Letlapa, Cardoso, Mogaila, Tshibwabwa, Tlaka, Ohizu, Makgalwa, Mbule, Rammala
