OFFICIAL: Stellenbosch unveil ex-Downs man

Stellenbosch FC have announced the signing of former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Brian Onyango, who is likely coming in as Ismael Toure's replacement, with the latter linked with a move away from the Winelands.

The news was confirmed by the club via their website on Tuesday morning, as they revealed that Onyango had joined as a fee agent following a successful trial period.

His free agent status came as a result of parting ways with Sundowns at the end of last season.

The 30-year-old's exit from the Brazilians was always around the corner, as he made just nine appearances across all competitions last term.

"Brian [Onyango] is a player who has enjoyed great success during his career and we are looking forward to adding his experience and winning mentality to our squad," Stellenbosch CEO Rob Benadie told the club's website.

"He has been brought in to bolster our defensive line and we have no doubt that he will make a valuable contribution towards both our domestic and continental ambitions."

Additionally, Onyango's arrival at Stellies could be part of the preparations for what has been reported as a possible exit for centre-back Touré.

The centre-back has long been linked with a move away from the Winelands outfit and his absence from both of their two-legged CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round fixtures against Eswatini side Nsingizini Hotspur has only fueled speculation.

Head coach Steve Barker has since been quoted saying he decided against playing the lanky defender so as to give him time to properly think about his further, without adding further stress upon him.

A decision on his future, as confirmed by the mentor, is expected by the end of this week, and he has been linked with all of Mzansi's Big Three, although it seems his ambition is to move to Europe.

Meanwhile, Stellenbosch are also still in talks with neighbours Cape Town Spurs over the transfer of striker Ashley Cupido, who is seen as a potential replacement for Iqraam Rayners.
