Stellies defender off to MLS

Stellenbosch have traded in rising defender Olwethu Makhanya just a season playing in the DStv Premiership.

Stellies have been busy in the window with Junior Mendieta, Ibraheem Jabaar, Juan Carlos Ortiz, Reid Bombay, Keegan Pool, Solomon Letsoenyo, Solly Khunyedi, Lance Weaver, and Glen Hahn all leaving.

The entrance has had Ivorian defender Ismael Olivier Toure, Thabo Moloisane, Oscarine Masuluke, and Mashweu Basil Mphahlele.

The departure has a latest member in Makhanya who has joined Philadelphia Union in the MLS Eastern Conference.

This transfer has been confirmed by Stellies.

"The deal represents a historic landmark for Stellenbosch FC as Makhanya becomes the club's first export to the United States of America, where he will compete against some of the best footballers in the world in the rapidly growing MLS," reads a statement from the club.

Makhanya only came through into the first team last season after graduating from the reserve team and featured in 24 games.

The 19-year-old was named the Nedbank Cup most promising player and was the youngest ever scorer for the club.

"As a club, we are incredibly proud to see Olwethu join Philadelphia Union and have no doubt that he will make a huge success of his time abroad," says Rob Benadie, the club CEO on the club's website.

Mamelodi Sundowns hotshot Cassius Mailula has also been linked with a move to the MLS.
