'It was a decision that led to all these emotions'

SuperSport United assistant coach Andre Arendse has given some insight into what led to Gavin Hunt's sending off against Orlando Pirates.

Matsatsantsa crashed out of the tournament in the first round after Vincent Pule's equaliser against his former side was not enough.

Hunt was red-carded early in extra-time for his remonstration over a third goal scored by Evidence Makgopa, after Monnapule Saleng went through one-on-one with goalkeeper Ricardo Goss.

"The entire game was based on emotions, that's what happens when you play a game like this at such a high level, at such high stakes," Arendse told SuperSport TV.

"It was a decision that led to all these emotions. From our angle, it looked like it was clear daylight between a player and an offside call. We were pretty sure.

"And in fairness to the officials and if he wasn't offside, we'll certainly apologize for it but we thought it was a clear offside and that's [the reason] for the emotions and one thing led to another."

However, the Bafana Bafana legend was proud of their performance, considering various new faces in the line-up.

"We've got a few new faces in the team, never mind the squad and you've got to combine that with the youngsters who are trying to get into the team as well, it was always gonna be a big ask for us," Arendse continued.

"But they never disappointed, none of them disappointed and its nice to see new faces fitting into what we're trying to do and when you come up against a team like Pirates, on a night like this, it's the biggest test ever in the PSL and we're glad we came through, even though the scoreline might suggest  [otherwise ] but we're really glad that the players came through the way they did.
