In our exciting feature How I Became a Goalkeeper, former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Alex Heredia shares his story of being born into a family of goalkeepers.
The accomplished Heredia currently is the goalkeeper coach of both Bafana Bafana and SuperSport United as part of Gavin Hunt's technical team.
"I only played for Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns here in South Africa.
"Those are the only two clubs I was playing for 20 years ago. I then became a goalkeeper coach at Orlando Pirates and then moved to Sundowns as a goalkeeper coach. After that, I went to Platinum Stars and recently, SuperSport United.
"Goalkeeping, it's a very long football tradition in my family in Argentina. Well, my father was a right-winger, and two of my uncles were goalkeepers.
"One of them was very successful in Argentina. He was my hero; he is the one who influenced me to become a goalkeeper."
"The goalkeeper of the century Juan Pablo Carrizo is someone I looked up to. He was playing for Argentina. He played for River Plate for over 20 years. He was my mentor.
"He was a typical goalkeeper in his years. Big, strong and very powerful.

"His biggest strength was in aerial balls. Everybody in Argentina was trying to emulate him."
"The super famous Emiliano Martinez from Argentina is someone today who I admire. You saw how he helped Argentina win the World Cup. I like him.
"Here in South Africa, we have a tremendous collection of goalkeepers.
"All-time my favourite was Moeneeb Josephs. But for those who are still playing currently, my favourite is Itumeleng Khune. He re-wrote the history books in goalkeeping in South Africa."
