Hunt weighs in on Rulani's Wydad move

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has thrown his support behind Rulani Mokwena, who has started his stint as head coach of Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, following an abrupt exit from Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mokwena parted ways with Sundowns just days before the club returned from holiday to begin their pre-season preparation.

In a statement that was published by the cub, it said the 37-year-old, who had guided them to back-to-back league titles and collected 60 wins from the 91 matches he oversaw, had not met the club's requirements set out in his contract.

The four-time league title winner did not stay unemployed for long as Wydad came knocking and concluded a deal to have Mokwena as their head coach in a matter of days.

Speaking to 94.7's MSW on Wednesday, Gavin Hunt gave a thumbs-up to his former nemesis with whom he regularly went toe-to-toe in the Tshwane Derby.

"I think it's a fantasist opportunity for Rulani," said Hunt.

"We don't know what's going on behind the scenes, but I think it's a great opportunity to step out of a club like Sundowns and go into that environment straight away. It's a great opportunity for him.

"It's a new environment for him and he is one step closer to across the water (Europe), which is where the real football is.

"So, it's a great opportunity for him and I'm sure he will do well for them.

"I mean, he is coming from a low base, the club did very badly last year, he can only improve them," he went on.

Meanwhile, the PSL season is expected to kick off on 3 August with the MTN8 quarter-finals.

SuperSport finished seventh last term and will have to battle defending champions Orlando Pirates, who finished second on the log.
