Hunt pulls in different direction with Rulani on SDs

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has sparked the Sporting Director debate, as he inadvertently held a different view to Rulani Mokwena.

Mokwena had an acrimonious departure from his former club Mamelodi Sundowns after allegations that he had a feud with Sporting Director Flemming Berg.

The 37-year-old coach, in the aftermath, said in an interview on Radio 2000 that he believes the head coach of a particular club should choose the Sporting Director and not the other way round.

The former Orlando Pirates coach also revealed that he has been given that privilege at his current club Wydad Casablanca, where the Sporting Director will be appointed at his recommendation.

However, Hunt, although not addressing the same topic, believes the appointment of Sporting Directors would benefit South African football and crucially held the view that the SD's should be above the head coach and make their choice on who they want to work with.

"You look at how clubs are run, I think we're going that way, getting Sporting Directors in, where they are keeping the philosophy of the club, that means you've got to get a coach that suits your philosophy," Hunt said on 947's MSW.

"Not just a coach who comes in and is different to how you wanna do things. Is he prepared to work with younger players? Is he prepared to coach more? I think the game in South Africa has to go that way. You get Sporting Directors in and you obviously have to work with the coach, employ the coach.

"And then you have the same philosophy. 'We can't pay for this, we have to do it like this, get younger players in, the team is getting too old', blah blah and there's got to be a clear pathline. South African football has to go that way, for longevity and to keep clubs a little bit more stable. The top clubs will always be there but I'm talking about the bottom eight clubs," the former Kaizer Chiefs coach added.

Mokwena has also been given carte blanche on transfers at Wydad, the privilege he did not have at Sundowns and an issue which allegedly led to a clash of personalities and who has the authority, between him and Berg.
