My Paycheque: When Swallows salaries matched the Big 3s

In this edition of My Paycheque a former Moroka Swallows and Arcadia Shepherds goalpoacher reveals how much he would be earning today if he was still active.

According to Noel 'Phinda Mzala' Cousins he would be one of the top earners in the Premier Soccer League [PSL].

"When we played we didn't get Paycheques, we got paid very little, we got R50 and some petrol money, we would get double bonus of R200 or R400 if we beat Kaizer Chiefs," Cousins tells KickOff.

"We never got big money in those days hey [Eighties]. It also depended on how many games we won.

"We had a flat rate of maybe R100 but our bonuses are the ones who made us play because that's where we made our money. That was at Arcadia.

"At Swallows we got a little bit more because there was some funding when Dr. Louis Luyt and David Pine Chabeli combined forces.

"We made R3000 hey, and we thought it was a lot of money. That was 1989, 1990 and 1991.

"I invested in a car, VW Beetle, then I didn't have to have my Dad take me to training all the time.

"Mamelodi Sundowns tried to sign me in 1986 but unfortunately that's when their brand started falling, Zola Mahobe was having his troubles with the bank.

"I was going to sign for Sundowns. But there was no concrete thing we never even got a chance to discuss contracts.

"If I was still playing today and scoring 30 goals a season for a club I think I'd be earning R500 000 a month."
