ex-Orlando Pirates coach Ruud Krol eyeing PSL return

Krol made a name for himself with The Buccaneers between 2008 and 2011, during which he bagged the club’s first ever domestic treble, which was subsequently followed by a second treble the very next season after his departure.

The Dutchman on Sunday celebrated his 70 birthday and was contacted by his homeland publication Algemeen Dagblad for a catch-up, during which he was quizzed over his handling of possible religious conflicts during his stay in Tunisia thus far.

“I come from the locker room of football and I'm still in the middle of it as a trainer. Players of different origins sit in a dressing room, but it is never an issue there,” Krol said in his interview.

“I have worked in Egypt, Morocco and Libya. And in Tunisia. But I have never experienced any hostility. The people are friendly. We recently went to Nigeria with CS Sfaxien, and I have never felt unsafe anywhere.

“The adventure has always attracted me. At Sfaxien we play for the CAF [Confederation] Cup, a great to experience again.

“The traveling makes it tough. When we play in Zambia, we are sometimes on the road for 24 hours on our way to a game. There is almost never a direct flight, and you just hang around at airports.”

The celebrated former Netherlands international also commented on his future plans and indicated his desire to perhaps return to South Africa, before having to defend against the perception of its high crime rate.

“My contract runs until the Summer [June]. Going to South Africa as a coach once more, that is still on my mind,” he revealed.

“What a beautiful country [South Africa is]. Dangerous? Yes, if you take the wrong turn, sure. But, in fact, the same also applies in Amsterdam, or in Naples [Italy]."
