Controversial Al Ahly star hit with another big ban

A controversial Al Ahly star has now been hit with another big ban following an unsavoury incident after a league match.

According to KingFut, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has fined Mahmoud Kahraba EGP 1 000 000 (about R588 000) and given him a 12-game ban for alleged offensive chants aimed at Zamalek supporters.

The incident is understood to have taken place after the Red Devils' 3-0 win over their bitter rivals on 21 January.

That match was Kahraba's first game after serving a lengthy suspension, and the striker made sure to get on to the score sheet.

After the comfortable win, however, the Egypt star was caught on camera shouting obscene chants about Zamalek with some Ahly fans.

This led to the White Knights submitting a complaint to the EFA against him, and now, almost three months later, Kahraba has finally received his punishment.

Regulations state that both the player and the club can appeal the sanction before 10 days has passed, and it is understood Al Ahly have already exercised this option.

Kahraba is no stranger to controversy, having previously been accused of leaking team news during Pitso Mosimane's tenure at the Cairo club, while his previous suspension, which was six months' long, was also related to Zamalek.

After he moved to Portuguese club Desportivo Aves from the White Knights in 2019 despite still being contracted to the Egyptian side until 2023, he was ordered by the Court of Arbitration for Sport to pay a $2 million (R36 million) fine to Zamalek, but having failed to do so before the deadline, FIFA stepped in and suspended him from football for half a year.
