'Disappointed' Euro-based star speaks on CAF POTY snub

Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface has admitted his disappointment after being overlooked for the 2024 CAF Men's Player of the Year shortlist.

The 23-year-old Nigerian striker was a standout performer last season, netting 21 goals and delivering 10 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions.

His contributions were instrumental in Leverkusen's journey to the UEFA Europa League final, where they eventually lost to Atalanta.

To add salt to the wounds, Boniface's compatriot Ademola Lookman stole the show in that final, bagging a hat-trick in Atalanta's 3-0 victory.

Boniface has carried that form into the current campaign, already notching eight goals and an assist in 15 appearances as he continues to adapt to life in the Bundesliga.

However, despite his stellar performances, Boniface's name was absent from the CAF POTY shortlist, which includes his compatriots Ademola Lookman and William Troost-Ekong, as well as South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Speaking to BBC Sport Africa, Boniface did not hide his frustration at being left out.

"It's certainly disappointing not to be recognised in the shortlist," he revealed per Naija News.

"Looking back at my performances last season, I believe I had a strong case for consideration, so it's hard not to feel let down. However, I try not to dwell on it too much."

While expressing his respect for the other nominees, Boniface made it clear that he believes his performances warranted inclusion on the list.

When asked who he believes should win the award, Boniface showed no bitterness and instead threw his full support behind Lookman.

"If I had to choose the winner, it would undoubtedly be Lookman, 100 per cent," he added.

"But if I were given the chance to select the nominees myself, I would certainly include my name among them."
