Ex-Chiefs star on latest move: I'm so grateful to be here

A former Kaizer Chiefs star has opened up on his latest move, with the African international expressing his gratitude at being at his new club.  

Anthony Akumu recently secured a move to newly promoted Iranian top-flight side Kheybar FC after being without a club since February.

The Persian Gulf Pro League outfit got their league campaign off to a good start, picking up a 1-0 victory Havadar SC on Friday, with the Kenya international having been named in the starting line-up for his new club. 

Speaking about the surroundings he now finds himself in, the 31-year-old stated his appreciation at being able to ply his trade in the country. 

"I'm so grateful to be in Iran, it's one of the historic countries, but now it's about me and it's about football," Akumu told Footballi, per Mozzart Sport

"I don't know much about Iranian club football, but they have a very good national team that always plays in the World Cup.

"I've only been in the club for a week but so far so good, I've seen a lot of players, they are very good players, the training has been good. 

"I've played one friendly match so far and I think we are improving and we will be ready when the season starts." 

Akumu made the move Chiefs from ZESCO United in 2020, making 47 appearances for the Betway Premiership side before leaving in July 2022, after which he spent a year at Japanese club Sagan Tosu.

The midfielder, who can also play in defence, will be in action once again when Kheybar take on Sepahan SC, who are also heading into the encounter on the back of an opening-day victory, on Friday evening.
