Ex-Man Utd coach 'truly fancies' African giants job

A former Manchester United coach has revealed his keen interest in taking charge of the Nigerian national team.

Ex-United youth coach Jonathan Hill has expressed his desire to take over the Super Eagles as speculation around the role intensifies.

The three-time Africa Cup of Nations winners have been without a permanent head coach since Finidi George's departure in June, despite securing qualification for AFCON 2025.

Interim boss Augustine Eguavoen has since overseen the team, but it has been suggested the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is exploring options for a new coaching structure.

Nigeria's disappointing home loss to Rwanda in their final AFCON qualifier has further fuelled talks of a technical shake-up, with the NFF claimed to be open to appointing a foreign tactician.

Hill, who worked at Manchester United between 1999 and 2001 as a youth coach before becoming assistant coach of the U18 side, has now declared his readiness for the demanding role.

"This is a role I truly fancy because of its demanding nature and the likelihood it brings to push one to do their best," Hill said, according to Sports Boom per Soccernet.ng.

The Englishman, who also managed Manchester City's U18 team during the 2011–12 season, cited Nigeria's untapped potential as a major draw.

"It's a great, untapped talent pool. I enjoy the cultural and sporting experiences, and I know I do well with them," he added.

"And the profile it offers, you know. It's a highly contested role, but with my strong résume, you might wonder why I'm not working at present. It's a mystery," he added.

Hill's coaching career has seen him hold roles across England and Europe, including assistant manager stints at Fulham, Exeter City, Rotherham, and Norwegian side Tromsdalen, where he also had his only managerial role, albeit a brief 20-month stint.

When asked about leading the Super Eagles to FIFA World Cup qualification, Hill expressed confidence.

"You have to applaud the work already being done by Augustine and his crew. Qualification for the World Cup is definitely something that can be achieved as well."
