Ex-Al Ahly star critical of Tau's performances

A former Al Ahly star has criticised South Africa international Percy Tau's performances this season.

The Bafana Bafana forward was named CAF Interclub Player of the Year last season after playing a starring role in Al Ahly's CAF Champions League triumph.

Tau finished the 2022/23 season with ten goals and seven assists across all competitions, but the current season has been disrupted by injuries and a drop in form for both club and country.

The 30-year-old has been an unused substitute in Al Ahly's last three encounters, with Marcel Koller's charges closing in on the Egyptian Premier League title.

Former Al Ahly star Sayed Moawad feels the South African's issue has to do with his mentality.

"Certainly, Percy Tau's level in training may not be the best. He is a good player, but he is 'temperamental'," the 45-year-old said, as per El Watan.

"When he is at his best psychologically, he performs at his best, but the current season was not good, and his psychological state affected him after the African Nations Cup.

"Marcel Koller does not rely on any player who does not perform strongly in training, and the coach refuses to include any player who has a sign of anger on his face."
