Former PSL star 'lined up for coaching role' in Zim

A former South African top-flight player is now reportedly being lined up for a coaching job in Zimbabwe.

South African football has always had a strong contingent of Zimbabwean stars, with the likes of Esrom Nyandoro, Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona, just to mention a few, holding cult status in Mzansi.

It is therefore no surprise that Zimbabwe is the nation with the joint-most players in the Betway Premiership, a record only matched by fellow neighbours Namibia, with both countries having nine players each in the division.

One Zimbabwean player who made a name for himself in the KwaZulu-Natal province is Danny Phiri, who spent five seasons at Golden Arrows between 2016 and 2021.

Now aged 35 and currently playing back in his native country, Phiri has recently faced questions about retirement from professional football after the 2024 Castle Premier League season with Chicken Inn.

Phiri has since refuted suggestions that he will retire, while it is claimed that Chicken Inn are lining him up to take over as a coach in the future, according to the Zimbabwean outlet The Chronicle.

"I am still around to play. It's not true that I have hung my boots yet. If there is anything, I will surely let you know, but for now, I am still looking forward to delivering on the field of play," Phiri said.

"I am not ready to retire yet. I still have a lot to offer, and I am excited about the prospect of playing another season.

"I will continue to work hard and give my best, and I am confident that I can still make a meaningful contribution to my team," Phiri said.

According to Transfermarkt, Phiri made 97 appearances during his time with Arrows, registering three goals and three assists from defensive midfield.
