JUST IN: African superstar charged with rape

African superstar Achraf Hakimi has now officially been charged with rape after being questioned by police.

It has been confirmed that a criminal case has been opened against the Paris Saint-Germain star following allegations of rape made against him earlier this week.

A 24-year-old woman informed police of the incident on 26 February, with the alleged rape occurring the previous day at the Morocco international's home in the Boulogne area of Paris.

According to AFP News Agency, French prosecutors have confirmed that Hakimi has been charged with rape.

The Madrid-born player allegedly paid for the woman to travel to his home on Saturday while his children and wife were away on holiday.

After speaking to police on Sunday, the fullback appeared at The Best FIFA Awards ceremony in Paris on Monday, where he was named in the FIFA FIFPro Men's Team of the Year.

His lawyer Fanny Colin dismissed the allegations earlier this week, insisting: "The accusations are false. He is calm and is at the disposal of justice."

The latest statement from the alleged victim's lawyer Rachel Flore Pardo read: "My client maintains everything that she said. She made the choice to speak exclusively to prosecutors and does not want the affair to become a media issue, mainly to protect her safety."

It is said that, under French law, being charged does not necessarily mean the case will go to trial, and he is not prohibited from leaving French soil regardless of the charge against him.

It is not yet clear whether or not he will travel with the team when they face Bayern Munich in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash in Germany on Wednesday, a fixture Les Parisiens are trailing 1-0.
