Manager who quit after Stellies CAF loss wants top job

The manager who dropped a bombshell resignation during a press conference after losing to Stellenbosch FC in September has revealed his interest in the top job at one of Africa's biggest teams.

On 13 September, Ouaddou shockingly resigned from his role as AS Vita Club head coach during a post-match press conference at Cape Town Stadium.

The DR Congo side had just lost 2-0 to Stellenbosch in the first leg of their second preliminary round CAF Confederation Cup tie, but Ouaddou told the press he was leaving his role with immediate effect, citing issues with the way the club is run.

Little more than a month later, Ouaddou has now confirmed he would be keen to replace Aliou Cisse as the Senegal national team's head coach.

Cisse parted ways with the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations champions after his contract expired in August.

The decision came after the Senegalese ministry of sport opposed the idea of Cisse extending his contract, instead placing his former assistant Pape Thiaw in charge as interim coach.

Thiaw oversaw Senegal's two recent 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Malawi that saw the team successfully book their spot at next year's tournament in Morocco.

However, former Morocco international Ouaddou has now raised his hand as a potential candidate for the role on a permanent basis.

"Of course, I am interested in an ambitious African selection, an ambitious project," Ouaddou told Afrik-Foot.

"Today, African football has progressed a lot, you certainly saw it during the last Africa Cup of Nations.

"It is a job that interests me, I am African at heart, I have travelled a lot on this continent, I was an international for 14 years.

"Senegal is a football country, a brother country, which is very close to Morocco. It is a country that could interest me, of course.

"But it is a country that has many high-level technicians who can replace Aliou. I will also take this opportunity to congratulate my friend and brother Aliou Cissé who did an excellent job with the Lions of Senegal.

"He is one of the pioneers, the African technicians who have proven that we can trust local expertise. [Ex-Algeria boss Djamel] Belmadi and he [Cisse] showed the way, I wanted from the bottom of my heart to pay tribute to this great man of African football."
