Moroccan top flight responds to controversial Rulani comments

The Moroccan top flight has responded to the controversial comments made by Wydad Athletic Club boss Rulani Mokwena recently.

This past weekend, Wydad climbed up to sixth on the 2024/25 Botola Pro 1 table after a 1-1 draw with HUSA.

After the match, Mokwena criticised the absence of fans in stadiums as well as the facilities in the league, especially with Morocco set to stage the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

"I am very concerned about the impact of the continued absence of fans in many matches," he told reporters after the game.

"We have followers from England, approximately 2.4 million followers, and they do not understand why we play some of our matches without fans, especially in the first round match against Maghreb de Fes.

"We are in a country that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup, took third place in the Olympic Games, is always present in major competitions, and will organise the African Cup (2025) and the World Cup (2030), and we present this image to nearly three million who follow Wydad from different parts of the world?"

With COD Meknes manager Abdelhay having made similar comments, the disparaging remarks have not gone down well with the league's organisers, with the division having since issued a public response, as per Kooora.

The statement from the league reads: "It has recently been noted that the statements of officials and coaches of some clubs are incorrect and do not serve the development of national football and the positive transformations it is experiencing in light of the intensive preparations for the continental and international events hosted by the country.

"The league draws attention to the seriousness of some inflammatory statements in the football system regarding refereeing and the absence of fans in some matches whose stadiums are undergoing temporary repairs that may be completed in the coming months.

"The league calls for concerted efforts by members of the national football family to keep pace with the good path that national football has recently taken, and to lay solid foundations to achieve what the clubs and their fans aim for, with respect for the institutions that manage the affairs of national football."
