'If we can get Pitso, he would add great value'

An African legend has insisted Pitso Mosimane would add great value to his former team if he accepts the job.

With the ex-Mamelodi Sundown coach's name having been thrown around in conversations regarding the Nigeria national team's next potential manager, former Paris Saint-Germain and Super Eagles star Jay-Jay Okocha has admitted that Mosimane's appointment would "add great value" to the side.

Nigeria are currently going through a rough patch as the side is winless after their opening two games in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, having drawn against Zimbabwe and Lesotho, leaving current head coach Jose Peseiro under considerable pressure.

With Mosimane currently without a job but in demand after parting ways with United Arab Emirates side Al Wahda last month, Okocha, in a recent interview, has praised the 59-year-old's abilities as a coach, and backed him for the Super Eagles job.

"I think Pitso, without any doubt, is one of the best African coaches. His track record is there for everyone to see," the 50-year-old told Prime Sports with Mahlatse Mphahlele.

"I think if we [Nigeria] can get a coach like that, he would add great value to our football.

"A coach that has got a lot of experience here is in our home in Africa.

"I don't know how true that is, but of course a coach like that is most welcome."

Mosimane himself has since replied to the comments made by Okocha, complimenting him for the type of player he was.

"Legendary JJ. Have you seen his footage when he was playing? He used to turn defenders in Europe inside out? Same class as Ronaldinho," Mosimane wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in response to a video of the abovementioned interview.

"A Gentleman also."

Aside from igniting crowds with his skilful dribbling on a regular basis, Okocha was also part of the Nigeria squad that lifted the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations trophy, and was also included in Brazilian icon Pele's list of his best 125 living footballers.
