North African coach reacts to being linked with Downs job

A North African coach has now reacted to being linked with the Mamelodi Sundowns hot seat.

Masandawana could reportedly yet look to bring in a new coach following the promotion of Manqoba Mngqithi to head coach and the appointment of Steve Komphela as senior coach.

This comes after Rulani Mokwena and the reigning DStv Premiership champions parted ways last week.

It has been claimed Downs are on the prowl to appoint a new manager, and Moamen Soliman is one of the latest to have been linked to the vacant role.

The Egyptian tactician currently manages Iraq Stars League side Al-Shorta, who, under his guidance, recently secured the seventh league triumph in their history.

The club also secured a domestic cup to add to their achievements over the course of the 2023/24 campaign.

With one more league match to play, Soliman has now described the Downs links as rumours, and insisted that he intends to stay put at his current club.

"I am continuing with Al-Shorta, and the Sundowns issue is a rumour," he told Channel 4 Sports, per Kooora.

"One of the agents spoke to me and there were no official negotiations, and the team recently announced its technical director."

Soliman guided the Harp to their first-ever Iraq Cup after beating Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya by a goal to nil in the final that took place on Wednesday.

Speaking after that victory, the manager said that winning two trophies this season was not what he had expected.

"There are many factors of which I am a part, such as the team, the management, and the fans, and the last thing I expected was to win the two championships."

"I played better football in the Libyan League than I did with Al-Shorta, but there was no success.

"I was telling my assistant coach, 'May God give us something better'."
