According to RMC Sport via Foot Italia, Cherki, who boasts an impressive record of 20 caps for France's U21 team, is a prime target for Algeria due to his Franco-Algerian heritage.
The North African nation are claimed to view him as a potential game-changer, having been monitoring his progress for years.
With his parents' roots firmly in Algeria, the two-time Africa Cup of Nations winners are said to be hoping to capitalise on this connection to lure the attacker away from France.
Italy, however, are believed to have emerged as a strong contender for the player's allegiance.
Following a 2-2 draw between the Italian and French U21 sides, the Italian Football Federation reportedly intensified discussions with Cherki's representatives.
Italy's claim to the player stems from his grandfather's heritage in Puglia, a southern region of the country.
France, meanwhile, reportedly remain determined to retain the attacker's services.
The French Football Federation is said to be closely following his development, with many in the setup viewing him as a future star for Les Bleus.
