'We expect Mokwana in Tunis on Thursday!'

Amid reports that Elias Mokwana's future at Esperance is now uncertain, a spokesperson has clarified what is expected of the Bafana Bafana star.

Mokwana played no part in South Africa's final qualifying match for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against South Sudan on Tuesday in Cape Town.

The winger is now facing the prospect of playing in his first AFCON next year in Morocco, as he wasn't part of the team that competed in the 2023 edition of the tournament in Ivory Coast earlier this year.

While there seems to be much for him to look forward to in the national team, Mokwana's club future has been cast under a cloud of doubt in recent weeks.

Some reports have suggested that the former Sekhukhune United star could make an early exit from Esperance due to the club reportedly failing to fulfil some of their financial commitments to the player.

Moreover, the 25-year-old has only made one start in the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 this season after eight matches, reducing the new signing to just 137 minutes of action since August 2024, according to Transfermarkt.

However, Esperance have now dismissed reports that the two parties could terminate their contract anytime soon.

A club spokesperson, Walid Guerfala, told AFRICAFOOTUNITED on Tuesday: "Elias Mokwana will return to Tunis after the match he will play today with South Africa against South Sudan for the last day of the CAN qualifiers.

"He will leave South Africa tonight and is expected in Tunis on Thursday. He cannot therefore participate in the championship match against US Ben Guerdane which is scheduled for Friday."

Guerfala added: "There is no problem with Mokwana. He is still at the disposal of Esperance de Tunis and he has no intention of terminating his contract.

"Relations are good between the player and the club. I can assure you of that."
