RIP: Footballer killed by lightning strike

A footballer has tragically lost his life after being hit by a lightning strike during a match.

The incident took place in Huancayo, Peru, during a regional tournament match between CD Juventud Bellavista and UD Familia Chocca, leaving four people injured and claiming the life of 39-year-old Jose Hugo De la Cruz Meza.

According to Infobae, the thunderstorm began to intensify, causing the match officials to halt the game so that players, as well as those in attendance, could seek shelter.

However, before that could be done, De la Cruz Meza and goalkeeper Juan Chocca Llacta were struck by lightning, with other players also being affected by the shockwaves.

The 34-year-old and the shot-stopper are believed to have been rushed to a nearby hospital, but De la Cruz Meza showed no vital signs upon arrival, while the keeper is said to have received severe burns and remains in critical condition.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Erick Estiven Ccente Cuyllor, 24-year-old Cristian Cesar Pituy Cahuana, and 16-year-old Josep Gustavo P. Ch. were the other players affected by the natural phenomenon.

The players are reported to have also received medical attention, but are in stable condition and remain under observation. It has been said that the incident has sparked debate between local authorities and sporting organisations about the implementation of safety protocols at sporting events, given that some mountainous areas face regular thunderstorms during this time of year.
