The Bayern stopper stated his comments were 'unecessary' and backed himself to remain the national team's number one stopper.
And within the drama that has since unfolded, Bayern president Uli Hoeness told
Sport Bild that he will not allow his players represent the country if the captain is dropped.
Despite the likes of Thomas Muller and Jerome Boateng no longer being part of Joachim Low's set-up, the Bundesliga champions hold a core of young players for Die Manschaft.
"We would never accept that [Ter Stegen replacing Neuer as No.1] [If Bayern are informed of the change] before it happens, we won't send any players to the national team anymore," he said.
The German publication then asked Die Mannschaft technical director Oliver Bierhoff if he was concerned by Hoeness's comments: "No. And according to FIFA rules, a club is obliged to send their players to the national team anyway."
