Bundesliga match report Union Berlin v Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund suffered their first defeat of the Bundesliga season after going down 3-1 to newly promoted Union Berlin on Saturday evening at Stadion An Der Alten Forsterei.

Lucien Favre handed summer signing Julian Brandt his first start, among the three changes from their victory over FC Köln, that included Ashraf Hakimi and Thomas Delaney.

The match had chances in the opening exchanges, but Berlin took a shock lead in the 22nd minute courtesy of Marius Bülter, who found the back of the net with a neat finish.

However, Paco Alcacer replied for Dortmund three minutes later with a composed finish inside the box, following a through ball from Jason Sancho.

The match was promising more goals with end to end attacks in the latter phases of the first stanza, particularly for Berlin but Dortmund shot-stopper Roman Bürki kept the score at 1-1 going to the break, as he denied Sebastien Andersson in first-half stoppage time with a brilliant save.

Berlin continued to create chances after the break and they were finally rewarded five minutes into the second stanza as Bülter restored their lead with a left-footed shot from just outside the box that found the bottom corner.

The newly promoted side were giving as much as they got, threatening to open a two-goal lead and they were eventually rewarded with 15 minutes remaining as Andersson bagged the third goal with a low strike to seal a first-ever Bundesliga victory for Berlin.
