Mats Hummels set for Borussia Dortmund return

Mats Hummels is set to complete a return to Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund after BVB and Bayern Munich reached an agreement for the German defender.

The centre-back is a product of Bayern's famous youth academy and spent 11 years as a youth at the Allianz Arena before being promoted to the club's first team in 2007, but was limited to only one senior appearance.

Hummels, 30, then spent close to a decade plying his trade for Dortmund from January 2008 to July 2016, cementing his spot as an integral part of the team and going on to win five trophies, including two Bundesliga titles.

The defender completed a return to the Bavarian giants when he signed a five-year deal in July 2016, and won seven trophies with them, including three league titles and two German Super Cups.

News of Hummels' move back to BVB was announced on Bayern's official social media accounts and website.

"Mats Hummels (30) is facing a return to Borussia Dortmund," a statement on Bayern's official website read.

"On Wednesday FC Bayern and BVB reached a fundamental agreement on a change of the central defender, who played for Dortmund from 2008 to 2016.

"Both parties have agreed to keep the transfer modalities confidential. To complete the transfer, Hummels now has to complete the medical check in Dortmund."
