Man City 'agree' record fee for new star

European and English champions Manchester City have now reportedly reached an agreement on a record-breaking deal to sign an international star.

According to The Athletic, Pep Guardiola's side have reached an agreement with Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig for the transfer of Croatia international Josko Gvardiol.

The Citizens are set to pay the German club €90 million (R1.8 billion) for the Croat's services, which will make him the most expensive defender ever, beating the record currently held by Harry Maguire for his €87 million (R1.7 billion) move to Manchester United from Leicester City in 2019.

Guardiola is believed to be a massive fan of the left-footed central defender and was determined to land his signature.

The Premier League champions and Leipzig are understood to have been in talks over the transfer for more than a month, but after the drawn-out negotiations, it appears the Citizens have finally got their man.

The 21-year-old is scheduled to undergo a medical later this week as he looks to become the second Croatian to make his way to the Etihad Stadium this off-season, following Mateo Kovacic's switch from Chelsea.

Gvardiol has played a pivotal role for both club and country in recent seasons, helping his nation to a second successive FIFA World Cup semi-final appearance in Qatar last year and playing his part in Leipzig's back-to-back DFB-Pokal triumphs.
