Arsenal back on top after Chelsea thrashing

Arsenal defeated struggling Chelsea 3-1 to reclaim top spot in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

Former Gunners striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was given a surprise start by the Blues with Joao Felix on the bench, while the Gunners handed starts to Jakub Kiwior, Jorginho and Leandro Trossard.

Arsenal needed just 18 minutes to get going after Martin Odegaard picked up a cross-field ball in the area by Granit Xhaka and slammed in off the crossbar.

The Blues targeted a swift reply where N'Golo Kante played Ben Chilwell in space and saw the fullback past Bukayo Saka for a cross-cum shot, but goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale courted.

Mikel Arteta's men pulled further away on the half-hour mark when Xhaka pulled wide again and delivered another ball in for Odegaard to convert and complete his brace.

It got worse for the embattled visitors as Gabriel Jesus latched on a loose ball from a tight angle in the area and slammed through Kepa Arrizabalaga to make it 3-1.

Aubameyang was removed at the start of the second half as interim manager Frank Lampard introduced Kai Havertz in the hope of a comeback.

The Gunners continued to dominate early from the break and should've had a fourth through a header by Gabriel Magalhaes, but Thiago Silva cleared off the line.

Arsenal were on the move again minutes from the break and saw Xhaka dart towards the middle of the area to get a shot in, but Kepa agonizingly tipped into touch.

The Blues pulled one back much against the run of play midway in the second half as Noni Madueke beat the offside trap and brought a throughball under control to beat Ramsdale.

However, the effort didn't inspire a comeback and the Gunners ended up victorious to return to the top of the table.
