Rashford inspires Villa comeback to deny Chelsea

Loanees Marcos Asensio and Marcus Rashford helped Aston Villa rally from behind to defeat Chelsea 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday night.

Blues coach Enzo Maresca was forced into one change after last week's defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion, as the injured Noni Madueke made way for club captain Reece James.

Chelsea made their intentions clear early on as Enzo Fernandez opened the scoring in the ninth minute by getting on the end of Pedro Neto's cross to slot home.

The hosts sprung into life after that and nearly levelled matters ten minutes later when Ollie Watkins was slipped through on goal, however the striker sent his effort straight at goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.

Chances began to drop at both ends, as Cole Palmer saw his low strike sail inches wide of the upright while Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was called upon to keep out Malo Gusto's header.

Villa introduced Rashford at halftime and the changed paid off ten minutes in as the Manchester United loanee got on the end of Lucas Digne's cross to tee up Marcos Asensio for the close-range finish.

The game went  from end-to-end in the latter stages, as Palmer passed up a good opening on 75 minutes when he slipped in a one-on-one situation before his effort was cleared by Ezri Konsa.

Chelsea were made to rue that miss as Jorgensen committed a goalkeeper by allowing Asensio's volley to sail through his hands, gifting Villa maximum points on the night.
