Liverpool suffer shock defeat at Anfield

Liverpool suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League following a 2-1 loss to Leeds United at Anfield on Saturday evening.

From the emphatic win at Ajax Amsterdam, the Reds provided just a solitary change as skipper Jordan Henderson started on the bench and Thiago Alcantara featured from the onset.

Leeds were ahead on four minutes after Rodrigo pounced on a misplaced pass across the six-yard area by Joe Gomez and stabbed into an empty net.

The Reds pulled level nine minutes later where Mohamed Salah jumped at the end of a corner-kick from Andrew Robertson and volleyed in at the near corner of the net.

Jesse Marsch's men looked to restore the lead midway through the first half when a ball from Rodrigo released Jack Harrison in space, but Alisson Becker parried the latter.

Liverpool responded a little later where a perfectly weighted ball from Trent Alexander-Arnold forced Illan Meslier out and allowed Darwin Nunez in for a shot, but Meslier saved.

No side made changes as the second half commenced, with the Reds as well as the visitors keen to grab the encounter by the scruff of the neck.

Leeds pressed the Reds high a little in the second half, but the host managed to work their way around the structure and broke away through Salah, Nunez and Roberto Firmino.

The Reds could've snatched lead with over 66 minutes played when Salah burst through from the left and cut inside to layoff to an unmarked Nunez, but Meslier made a point-blank stop.

More danger signs followed the visitors eight minutes apart as Nunez dropped a shoulder outside the area and curled towards the top corner only for Meslier to tip away.

With James Milner on for Alexander-Arnold, the Reds kept probing in the dying minutes and another point-blank save from Meslier parried a looping header in the area by Firmino.

At the other end, Leeds went ahead with seconds to go as Crysencio Summerville sneaked in from the shoulder of the area and slotted in to give his side a famous win.
