Claude Le Roy on SAFA shortlist for South Africa Bafana Bafana job

The veteran Frenchman, who has vast experience coaching African teams, joins former Bafana Bafana coaches Carlos Queiroz and Stuart Baxter, as well as former England boss Roy Hodgson, as potential candidates to replace Shakes Mashaba in the national hotseat.

snl24.com/kickoff has been informed by high-ranking officials at SAFA that the four coaches mentioned above are the only names on the current shortlist being mulled over by the technical committee.

CAF Coach of the Year Pitso Mosimane was the first choice of SAFA to make a return to the post he left in 2012 but has on many occasions ruled himself out, and recently rebuffed an approach by the association before signing a new four-year deal with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Le Roy is currently employed by Togo but faces an uncertain future after the team were booted out in the first round of the African Nations Cup finals currently on the go in Gabon.

The team drew 0-0 with with holders Ivory Coast in their opener, but then lost to Morocco and DR Congo, both by 3-1 scorelines.

The 68-year-old was a runner-up with Cameroon in 1986 and then took them to the title two years later.

He has also coached Senegal, DR Congo (twice), Ghana and Congo-Brazzaville, when he came up against Bafana in the qualifiers for the 2015 Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea. South Africa claimed a 2-0 win in Brazzaville and drew 0-0 at home.

Le Roy – who is considered an outside contender behind Queiroz, Hodgson and Baxter – has been close to coaching the national team before and had expressed his desire to do so before the 2010 World Cup.
