According to reports in Spain, the forward is expected to play a bigger part at the Metropolitano Stadium in contrast to his fringe role under his former Barca boss Xavi Hernandez.
The recent Atleti exits of Joao Felix and Matheus Cunha are believed to be a key reason Diego Simeone's side has brought in the Dutch 28-year-old to reinforce their struggling attack this season.
Depay was not the only Netherlands player to make a big move this month, with his international teammate Wout Weghorst having joined Manchester United on a loan deal from English Championship outfit Burnley.
The tall striker is essentially a short-term replacement for the vacant centre-forward role left by Cristiano Ronaldo in November.
The 30-year-old will spend the remainder of the 2022/23 season at Old Trafford, with United having paid £2.5 million (R53 million) to Besiktas as compensation for terminating his temporary stay at the Turkish club, while Burnley have also pocketed £2.6 million (R55 million) for the interim transfer.
The Red Devils' fellow Premier League giants Chelsea, meanwhile, completed the signing of Ukrainian sensation Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk.
The winger set the Blues back by a hefty €70 million (R1.3 billion), plus €30 million (R557 million) in add-ons, and signed a lengthy eight-and-a-half-year deal at Stamford Bridge.
German powerhouses Bayern Munich confirmed earlier this week that they had acquired Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal until June 2025.
The shot-stopper is expected to fill in for Manuel Neuer, who broke his leg on holiday after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
