European star: Awarding Saudi the World Cup would be a mistake

A European star has now voiced his concern about the 2034 FIFA World Cup, saying that handing the showpiece to Saudi Arabia would be a "mistake".

Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka was speaking ahead of Germany's upcoming friendlies against Turkey and Austria and expressed his concern about the Arab country being the sole bidders for the tournament.

The player referenced the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosted by Qatar, which received a lot of criticism for the country's human rights track record and migrant worker rights among other things.

During the competition, the German national side were in the headlines after they covered their mouths in Unisom to protest FIFA's decision at the time to ban players from wearing the LGBTQ armband during the tournament as homosexuality is illegal in Qatar.

Similarly, same-sex relationships are also considered to be a criminal act in Saudi.

He was asked whether or not the German FA must vocalise their displeasures if the decision goes in favour of Saudi, and said, as per the Daily Mail: "I definitely see it that way, that still stands, the mistake was in the awarding (of the 2022 tournament to Qatar) and in the criteria that played a role.

"It has obviously not been corrected, and that's definitely not good."

After Australia pulled out of the bid to host arguably the biggest football competition set to take place in 2034, Saudi emerged as the sole bidder to host the World Cup.

After submitting their official bid, President of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation Yasser Al Misehal stated the country's intentions of using football as a tool to unite the world in a statement.

"This official submission continues our journey to make the dreams of our people a reality," he said.

"The 2034 FIFA World Cup is our invitation to the world to witness Saudi Arabia's development, experience its culture and become part of its history. We are extremely committed to presenting the most competitive bid possible that will also help unite the world through football."
