Messi deal to be funded by entire league instead of club?

An executive at a top international league has now revealed they would be willing to fund a potential deal in order to make sure Lionel Messi signs for a certain team in their division.

With Messi's deal at Paris Saint-Germain set to expire at the end of this season, his future continues to be the subject of heavy speculation.

Negotiations between PSG and his father Jorge Messi appear to have stalled as no decision has been reached despite several weeks of talks over a potential contract extension.

FC Barcelona are also believed in the picture, with various officials from the club having already confirmed their desire to see the Argentine return to the Camp Nou.

However, reports in Spain suggest that a move back to Catalonia could be complicated, with LaLiga president Javier Tebas recently stating that the Blaugrana cannot make any new signings going forward due to their poor standing with regards to the division's financial fair play regulations.

Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal, meanwhile, have been credited with an interest in the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner, while the United States of America is also widely considered a potential destination for the attacker.

Inter Miami, who are co-owned by David Beckham, are understood to be huge admirers of Messi, with their manager Phil Neville having publicly maintained that he is eager see the move happen.

The Florida-based outfit have now seemingly received a huge boost in their quest to get Messi on board, with Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber having insisted that the league itself would contribute financially towards the transfer if necessary.

"You're dealing with perhaps the most special player in the history of the game. So when there are rumours of him connected to Miami, that's great," Garber told The Athletic

"And if it could happen, it would be terrific for MLS, it would be terrific for Messi and his family, and like everything with us, we try to run every opportunity down.

"I can't give any more details than that because we don't have them.

"We're going to have to structure a deal that's going to compensate him in ways that he and his family expect.

"What that is? Honestly, we don't know today, but he's probably not going to be a [targeted allocation money] player."
