Neymar: Why Messi, Mbappe and I failed for PSG

Neymar has shared his honest opinion as to why the trio of him, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe failed to live up to expectations at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazilian star recently returned to training after being ruled out of action since February, although his future is still up in the air following the arrival of his former FC Barcelona boss Luis Enrique at the PSG helm.

While the French giants get ready for a new season without Messi and potentially Mbappe too, the 31-year-old has now opened up about his strike partnership with his fellow superstars.

Although the trio enjoyed their most productive season together in the 2022/23 campaign out of the two years they played in the same team, they failed to claim the elusive UEFA Champions League trophy they were effectively signed to win, being eliminated at the round of 16 on both occasions.

Last season, Messi contributed with 21 goals and 20 assists in 41 games, Mbappe registered 41 goals and 10 assists in 43 outings, and Neymar scored 18 times and chipped in with a further 17 assists in 29 matches.

Despite this, the trio still could not deliver European glory, considered a failure by many, including PSG Ultras and the club's executive management, and the Selecao talisman has now admitted that the three attackers "did not fit".

"Football stuff," Neymar answered when asked about their struggles during an interview on YouTube channel Que Papinho.

"[Real Madrid's] Galacticos didn't win the Champions League, so it's part of it.

"We had a very strong team. Me, Messi, and Mbappe are three guys who are the best in the world.

"We know that, but unfortunately, it didn't fit. It wasn't good for us.

"Obviously, we wanted to win everything, [and] we were close in the locker room, but sometimes football is not right [or] fair.

"It's not like a cake recipe."

With Messi having joined Inter Miami, Les Parisiens' famous front three could be entirely disintegrated by the start of next season as Mbappe continues to be heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, potentially leaving only Neymar behind at the Parc des Princes – although he has been linked with a departure himself.
