Messi drops 'surprise' retirement hint

Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi has surprisingly hinted at the idea of potentially retiring in the near future.

The 35-year-old's contract is expiring at the end of this season and reports continue to suggest that a return to Barcelona is on the cards. 

With Joan Laporta and Xavi Hernandez already publicly speaking about a potential return for the Argentine, PSG have reportedly stepped up their efforts to secure the seven time Ballon d'Or winner signature on an extension. 

Despite Messi being in the latter stages of his career, the footballer still appears to be highly sought after.

However, in a recent interview with Mundo Deportivo, the superstar admitted that his playing career could be over soon.

"I love soccer, I love playing it and I enjoy it, the only thing I've done all my life is play soccer and I'm sure that I do it later will be related, although I don't know what." Messi explained. 

"I don't think I'll play much more,"

If Messi is seemingly planning to retire in the near future, this could have an effect on the he chooses to rejoin Barca or stay at PSG.

The 35-year-old claimed in a interview in August that this World Cup will be his last which put an end to rumours that the attacker wants to feature in the 2026 tournament. 

Despite the winger's comments, Messi's national team manager Lionel Scaloni has admitted that he hopes the veteran will continue to play for the next four years with the international team.
