Zlatan: I felt like just a number at Man Utd

Former Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has opened up on his time at the club, surprisingly revealing that he "felt like just a number" at Old Trafford.

The Sweden international represented some of the biggest clubs in world football, including Barcelona, Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, before he joined United in 2016 at the age of 35.

The former striker joined the Red Devils when Jose Mourinho was in the hot seat, and stayed at the club until 2018, scoring 29 goals in 53 appearances.

He also helped the side win a UEFA Europa League trophy, as well as a League Cup – Ibrahimovic scored two goals in the final against Southampton in 2017.

However, while speaking in an interview with The Athletic, the current AC Milan advisor said that his time at the Theatre of Dreams was unlike what he had previously been accustomed to.

"They were different from what I was used to," he said.

"You're just a number there, I felt.

"Then, in my mindset, I want to make my own history.

"I was not interested in what happened before, with all respect. Yes, that brings pressure to live up to what they were used to.

"But I was not interested in listening to the Class of '92.

"That doesn't help me because it's not my team [that I support] and I wanted to do my own history.

"I wanted people to say, 'You won and United won this together.'

"I was 35. I came to England. People said I'm too old, I should retire, blah blah blah.

"But this triggers me. This – I will prove you wrong."

The 42-year-old also spoke about working under Mourinho, highlighting the Portuguese tactician's qualities that he could resonate with.

"Jose was a machine. He brings the best out of you. He's that person – manipulative. He knows how to get in your head. He knows how to treat you, independent of your level.

"He reminded me of [Fabio] Capello. But a newer version. Discipline. Hardcore. Intense. Not the soft types.

"This is what I like. Remember where I came from? My family is tough."
